Abstract
Methods and apparatuses for taking, using and displaying three-dimensional (3D) volumetric models of a patient's dental arch. A 3D volumetric model may include surface (e.g., color) information as well as information on internal structure, such as near-infrared (near-IR) transparency values for internal structures including enamel and dentin.

An intraoral scanning system comprising:
- a hand-held wand having at least one image sensor and one or more light sources, wherein the one or more light sources are configured to emit visible light and a near-infrared (near-IR) light;
- a display output;
- a user input device;
- and
- one or more processors operably connected to the hand-held wand, the one or more processors configured to:
- display a three-dimensional (3D) model of a patient's dental arch on the display output;
- display an indicator over a portion of the 3D model of the patient's dental arch on the display output;
- change in a relative position between the indicator and the 3D model of the patient's dental arch based on input from the user input device;
- identify, from both the 3D model of the patient's dental arch and a plurality of images of the patient's dental arch taken from different angles and positions relative to the patient's dental arch, a two-dimensional (2D) image based on a relative angle and position between the indicator relative to the 3D model of the patient's dental arch;
- and
- display the identified 2D image based on the relative angle and position between the indicator relative to the 3D model of the patient's dental arch.
An intraoral scanning system, the system comprising:
- a hand-held wand having at least one image sensor and a light source configured to emit light at a spectral range within near-infrared (near-IR) range of wavelengths;
- a display output;
- a user input device;
- and
- one or more processors operably connected to the hand-held wand, display and user input device, the one or more processors configured to:
- display a three-dimensional (3D) model of a patient's dental arch;
- display an indicator over at least a portion of the 3D model of the patient's dental arch;
- change in a relative position between the indicator and the 3D model of the patient's dental arch based on input from the user input device;
- generate, from both the 3D model of the patient's dental arch and a plurality of images of the patient's dental arch taken from different angles and positions relative to the patient's dental arch, a two-dimensional (2D) image associated with an angle and a position of the indicator relative to the 3D model of the patient's dental arch, wherein the generated 2D image is based on a near-infrared (near-IR) image taken at an angle and a position that approximates the angle and the position of the indicator relative to the 3D model of the patient's dental arch;
- and
- display the generated 2D image associated with the angle and the position of the indicator relative to the 3D model of the patient's dental arch.
An intraoral scanning system, the system comprising:
- a hand-held wand having at least one image sensor and a light source configured to emit visible light, light causing fluorescence and near-infrared (near-IR) light;
- a display output;
- a user input device;
- and
- one or more processors operably connected to the hand-held wand, display and user input device, the one or more processors configured to:
- display a three-dimensional (3D) model of a patient's dental arch based on the visible light;
- display an indicator over at least a portion of the 3D model of the patient's dental arch;
- change in a relative position between the indicator and the 3D model of the patient's dental arch based on input from the user input device;
- generate, from both the 3D model of the patient's dental arch and a plurality of images of the patient's dental arch taken from different angles and positions relative to the patient's dental arch, a two-dimensional (2D) image corresponding to the to the position that approximates an angle and a position of the indicator relative to the 3D model of the patient's dental arch that is based on a near-infrared (near-IR) image, and/or a fluorescent image and/or a visible light image taken at an angle and a position that approximates the angle and the position of the indicator relative to the 3D model of the patient's dental arch;
- and
- display the 2D image corresponding to the position that approximates the angle and the position of the indicator relative to the 3D model of the patient's dental arch.
An intraoral scanning system comprising:
- a means for scanning a patient's dental arch having at least one means for imaging and one or more means of illumination, wherein the one or more means for illumination are configured to emit a visible light and a near-infrared (near-IR) light;
- a means for displaying an output;
- a means for inputting a user input;
- and
- one or more processors operably connected to the hand-held wand, the one or more processors configured to:
- display a three-dimensional (3D) model of a patient's dental arch on the means for displaying the output;
