Abstract
The disclosure relates to a radiation shielding element, which comprises at least one core that shields from ionizing radiation and is surrounded by at least one protective layer, said protective layer consisting of at least one outer layer and at least one indicator layer. The disclosure also relates to an X-ray inspection unit having a shielding device at the entrance (E) and/or exit (A) of radiation tunnel, said radiation shielding device consisting of a radiation shielding curtain which comprises a plurality of the claimed radiation shielding elements. The disclosure finally relates to methods for assuring a minimum lead equivalence of a radiation shielding element, particularly for an X-ray inspection unit.

A radiation shielding element, comprising:
- at least one core comprising a shielding material that has a thickness configured to sufficiently absorb and/or scatter ionizing radiation;
- and
- at least one protective layer that entirely encloses the at least one core to protect the at least one core from abrasion, wherein the at least one protective layer comprises:
- at least one outer layer comprising of at least one of rubber, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), or protective lacquer, and
- an indicator portion including at least two indicator layers immediately adjacent to one another for indicating frictional wear on the protective layer and replacement of the radiation shielding element, the at least two indicator layers immediately adjacent to one another for indicating frictional wear on the protective layer and replacement of the radiation shielding element,
- wherein the at least one outer layer and the at least two indicator layers include a same material as the shielding material of the at least one core so as to provide additional absorption and/or scattering of ionizing radiation capability to the radiation shielding element than just the at least one core itself, the same material integrated within each respective at least one outer layer and the at least two indicator layers.
A radiation shielding element, comprising:
- at least one core comprising a shielding material that has a thickness configured to sufficiently absorb and/or scatter ionizing radiation;
- and
- at least one protective layer that entirely encloses the at least one core to protect the at least one core from abrasion, wherein the at least one protective layer comprises:
- at least one outer layer comprising of at least one of rubber, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), or protective lacquer, and
- an indicator portion including at least two indicator layers immediately adjacent to one another for indicating frictional wear on the protective layer and replacement of the radiation shielding element, the at least two indicator layers immediately adjacent to one another for indicating frictional wear on the protective layer and replacement of the radiation shielding element, the at least two indicator layers distinguishable in color from the outer layer, the at least two indicator distinguishable from one another.
An X-ray inspection system, comprising:
- a radiation tunnel comprising an entrance and an exit;
- and
- a radiation shielding curtain located at least at one of the entrance of the radiation tunnel or the exit of the radiation tunnel, the radiation shielding curtain comprising:
- at least one core comprising a shielding material that has a thickness configured to sufficiently absorb and/or scatter ionizing radiation, and
- at least one protective layer that entirely encloses the at least one core to protect the at least one core from abrasion, wherein the at least one protective layer comprises:
- at least one outer layer comprising of at least one of rubber, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), or protective lacquer, and
- an indicator portion including at least two indicator layers immediately adjacent to one another for indicating frictional wear on the protective layer and replacement of the radiation shielding curtain, the at least two indicator layers immediately adjacent to one another for indicating frictional wear on the protective layer and replacement of the radiation shielding curtain, the at least two indicator layers distinguishable in color from the outer layer, the at least two indicator distinguishable from one another.
