Abstract
The disclosed technology includes a biodegradable utensil and methods for manufacturing the same. The utensil can comprise a utility portion configured to manipulate a food item, a handle portion, and a transition portion disposed between the handle portion and the utility portion. The handle portion can comprise a body having a first thickness, thickness-reducing features each having a thickness less than the first thickness, and a bead extending along at least some of a length of the handle portion. The bead can be continuous and uninterrupted, can extend between a first thickness-reducing feature and a second thickness-reducing feature, and can have a second thickness that is greater than the first thickness.
Claims20
A biodegradable utensil comprising:
- a utility portion located at a first end of the utensil, the utility portion being configured to manipulate a food item;
- and
- a handle portion located at a second end of the utensil, the second end being opposite the first end, and the handle portion comprising:
- a body having a first thickness;
- a plurality of thickness-reducing features located along at least a portion of the body, each of the plurality of thickness-reducing features having a thickness less than the first thickness;
- and
- a bead extending along at least some of a length of the handle portion, the bead (i) being continuous and uninterrupted, (ii) extending between a first thickness-reducing feature of the plurality of thickness-reducing features and a second thickness-reducing feature of the plurality of thickness-reducing features, and (iii) having a second thickness that is greater than the first thickness;
- and
- a transition portion disposed between the handle portion and the utility portion.
A method for manufacturing a biodegradable utensil, the method comprising:
- providing a mold comprising a negative space corresponding to a utensil having:
- a utility portion located at a first end of the utensil, the utility portion being configured to manipulate a food item;
- and
- a handle portion located at a second end of the utensil, the second end being opposite the first end, and the handle portion comprising:
- a body having a first thickness;
- a plurality of thickness-reducing features located along at least a portion of the body, each of the plurality of thickness-reducing features having a thickness less than the first thickness;
- and
- a bead extending along at least some of a length of the handle portion, the bead (i) being continuous and uninterrupted, (ii) extending between a first thickness-reducing feature of the plurality of thickness-reducing features and a second thickness-reducing feature of the plurality of thickness-reducing features, and (iii) having a second thickness that is greater than the first thickness;
- and
- a transition portion disposed between the handle portion and the utility portion;
- introducing a material into the mold;
- and
- hardening the material to form the utensil.
