Abstract
The present disclosure provides functionalized powder particles and methods of forming functionalized powder particles. The functionalization is acquired through the formation of primary and/or secondary structures on a powder particle. Functionalization can be controlled to bring about changes in a broad range of physical and/or chemical properties.

A filter configured to lyse a cell, the filter comprising:
- a chamber, the chamber comprising a plurality of surface etched powder particles within the chamber, each of the surface etched powder particles independently comprising a crystalline, polycrystalline, semi-crystalline, or amorphous semiconductor or insulator powder particle which is etched such that each of the surface etched powder particles independently comprises a structure selected from the group consisting of pores, pits, craters, nanowires, cones, pinnacles, hoodoos, coral, cords, walls, fins, ridges, crags, pyramids, and inverted pyramids;
- an inlet fluidically coupled to the chamber;
- and
- an outlet fluidically coupled to the chamber;
- wherein, when passing a composition comprising the cell through the filter from the inlet to the outlet, the one or more of the plurality of surface etched powder particles contacts the cell, thereby lysing the cell.
