Automated container loader

An automated container loader for loading a smaller storage container into a larger storage container, the automated container loader comprising:

• a container support configured for receiving a larger storage container;
• and
• a container loading assembly configured to receive a smaller storage container above a larger storage container and release the smaller storage container to allow the smaller storage container to descend under gravity into the larger storage container;
• wherein the container loading assembly includes a plurality of engagement surfaces configured to engage the smaller storage container during at least a portion of a descent of the smaller storage container to control a descent velocity of the smaller storage container under gravity.

A method for loading a smaller storage container into a larger storage container in an automated manner, the method comprising:

• receiving a smaller storage container on a trapdoor above a larger storage container, the trapdoor including at least two pivotally mounted door panels in a horizontal initial position for receiving the smaller storage container;
• pivotally rotating the door panels downwards to allow the smaller storage to descend between the door panels into the larger storage container under gravity;
• and
• controlling pivotal rotation of the door panels during a descent of the smaller storage container such that the door panels will frictionally engage the smaller storage container during at least a portion of the descent.
