Abstract
Techniques for identifying mobile device use by a driver of a vehicle during a driving event are provided. In an example, motion data collected by one or more sensors of a mobile device during a driving event are obtained. Using the motion data, the motion data is reoriented to the reference frame of the vehicle. From the reoriented motion data, it is determined that the mobile device moved toward a driver's side of the vehicle and a front screen of the mobile device faced the driver's side of the vehicle during the driving event. Based on the movement and orientation of the mobile device toward the driver's side, a use of the mobile device by the driver is identified.
Claims20
A method of identifying mobile device use by a driver of a vehicle during a driving event, the method comprising:
- obtaining, from a mobile device, motion data collected by one or more sensors of the mobile device during the driving event;
- reorienting the motion data to a reference frame of the vehicle using the motion data;
- determining, from the reoriented motion data, that the mobile device moved toward a driver's side of the vehicle during the driving event;
- determining, from the reoriented motion data, that a front screen of the mobile device faced toward the driver's side of the vehicle during the driving event;
- and
- identifying, based on the mobile device being moved toward the driver's side of the vehicle and the front screen of the mobile device being faced toward the driver's side of the vehicle, a use of the mobile device by the driver during the driving event.
A mobile device, comprising:
- a memory configured to store a set of instructions;
- and
- a processor configured to execute the set of instructions to:
- obtain, from the mobile device, motion data collected by one or more sensors of the mobile device during a driving event in a vehicle;
- reorient the motion data to a reference frame of the vehicle;
- determine, from the reoriented motion data, that the mobile device moved toward a driver's side of the vehicle during the driving event;
- determine, from the reoriented motion data, that a front screen of the mobile device faced toward the driver's side of the vehicle during the driving event;
- and
- identify, based on the mobile device being moved toward the driver's side of the vehicle and the front screen of the mobile device being faced toward the driver's side of the vehicle, a use of the mobile device by a driver of the vehicle during the driving event.
A non-transitory computer readable medium storing instructions that, when executed by a processor of a mobile device, causes the processor to perform operations including:
- obtaining, from the mobile device, motion data collected by one or more sensors of the mobile device during a driving event in a vehicle;
- reorienting the motion data to a reference frame of the vehicle;
- determining, from the reoriented motion data, that the mobile device moved toward a driver's side of the vehicle during the driving event;
- determining, from the reoriented motion data, that a front screen of the mobile device faced toward the driver's side of the vehicle during the driving event;
- and
- identifying, based on the mobile device being moved toward the driver's side of the vehicle and the front screen of the mobile device being faced toward the driver's side of the vehicle, a use of the mobile device by a driver of the vehicle during the driving event.
