Dynamic plane selection in data storage system

A method comprising:

• determining that a number of planes of a multiplane die used simultaneously for accessing data should be changed, the multiplane die being part of a non-volatile memory module of a plurality of non-volatile memory modules of a storage system;
• in response to determining that the number of planes the multiplane die used simultaneously for accessing data should be changed, utilizing a new block size for allocating blocks by combining a set of erase blocks at a same address in separate planes based on a newly determined number of planes.

A non-transitory computer readable storage medium storing instructions, which when executed, cause a processing device of a storage system controller to:

• determine that a number of planes of a multiplane die used simultaneously for accessing data should be changed, the multiplane die being part of a non-volatile memory module of a plurality of non-volatile memory modules of a storage system;
• in response to determining that the number of planes the multiplane die used simultaneously for accessing data should be changed, utilize a new block size for allocating blocks by combining a set of erase blocks at a same address in separate planes based on a newly determined number of planes.
