Abstract
Polymeric tubing, for use with catheters or other medical devices, where the polymeric tubing can have regions of customized properties including, but not limited to, durometer, torque control, flexibility, axial strength, stiffness, etc. One variation allows for selective design to configure transitions between regions such that there can be gradual or customized transitions between various regions with different structural characteristics between the regions. Additional variations include outer layers having a plurality of material sections extending in a spiral direction along an axial length to form a continuous wall of the outer layer. In certain variations, the structural characteristic differential is minimized or eliminated as compared to conventional catheters.
Claims33
A medical tubing comprising:
- a tubular body extending along an axial length, the tubular body having a first composite section extending along at least a portion of the axial length;
- wherein the first composite section comprises a plurality of material sections extending along at least a portion of the tubular body to form a wall of the tubular body;
- and
- wherein the plurality of material sections include at least a first material section that is circumferentially adjacent along a length of the first material section to a second material section, wherein a structural property of the first material section is different than a structural property of the second material section, and wherein a width of the first material section forms a portion of an interior surface of the wall of the tubular body and the width of the first material section decreases along a radial outward direction from the interior surface of the wall as a width of the second material section increases.
A catheter tubing comprising:
- a tubular body having an axis and extending along an axial length, the tubular body having a composite section extending along at least a portion of the axial length, the composite section having a wall at least partially formed from a plurality of first material sections and a plurality of second material sections, wherein each first material section of the plurality of first material sections has a first material property and wherein each second material section of the plurality of second material sections has a second material property, wherein the second material property differs from the first material property;
- wherein each first material section of the plurality of first material sections is circumferentially adjacent and joined to one the second material sections of the plurality of second material sections;
- wherein a width of each first material section of the plurality of first material sections forms a portion of an interior surface of the wall and wherein the width of each of the first material sections decreases along a radial outward direction as a width of each second material section of the plurality of second material sections increases such that a structural characteristic of an interior of the wall changes over a radial direction.

A catheter tubing comprising:
- a tubular body having an axis and extending along an axial length, the tubular body having a composite section extending along at least a portion of the axial length, the composite section including a first material section circumferentially adjacent to a second material section in a repeating series, where the first material section forms a portion of an interior surface of the tubular body;
- wherein a structural property of the first material section differs from a structural property of the second material section;
- wherein a width of the first material section decreases in a radial outward direction as a width of the second material section increases such that a structural characteristic of an interior of a wall of the composite section differs from a structural characteristic of an exterior of the wall.
