Abstract
The subject invention provides safe, environmentally friendly compositions and efficient methods for reverse osmosis. More specifically, the subject invention provides compositions derived from microorganisms for reverse osmosis, which can be used for increasing the rate of reverse osmosis, the quality of the purified liquid resulting from reverse osmosis, the filtration efficiency of the semi-permeable reverse osmosis membrane, or any combination thereof.
Claims20
A method of reverse osmosis, the method comprising:
- a) providing an aqueous liquid containing an impurity;
- b) contacting a composition comprising biosurfactant to the aqueous liquid, a semi-permeable membrane, or a combination thereof;
- and
- c) filtering the aqueous liquid through the semi-permeable membrane,
- wherein the semi-permeable membrane has a high-pressure side and a low-pressure side during the filtering step;
- and
- wherein a portion of the impurity remains on the high-pressure side of the semi-permeable membrane.
A reverse osmosis composition comprising a biosurfactant and/or yeast culture comprising a biosurfactant and a traditional reverse osmosis component, wherein the traditional reverse osmosis component is selected from one or a combination of the following:
- a) chemical surfactant;
- b) antiscalant;
- c) biocide;
- d) preservative;
- e) chlorine remover;
- f) membrane cleaner;
- and
- g) pH booster.
