Abstract
A functionalized polymer containing at least one reactive carbonyl group, more preferably at least one beta-dicarbonyl group, is provided. The polymer is preferably substantially free of segments derived from bisphenol A and epoxides thereof. The functionalized polymer, which can be a polyether polymer, is useful in preparing coating compositions for use in packaging applications, including coating compositions for use in forming interior or exterior coatings of food or beverage containers.
Claims24
An aqueous coating composition comprising:
- a water-based liquid carrier and a polyether polymer having a beta-dicarbonyl group;
- wherein the polyether polymer has a glass transition temperature of 60° C. to 150° C. and a number average molecular weight of 2,000 to 20,000;
- and
- wherein the aqueous coating composition forms a thermally-cured coating for a food or beverage container when cured at a temperature of at least 150° C. and wherein, prior to curing, the aqueous coating composition includes the polyether polymer having the beta-dicarbonyl group.
A method of applying an aqueous coating composition to a metal substrate prior to or after forming the metal substrate into a food or beverage container or portion thereof and baking the aqueous coating composition to form a cured coating,
- wherein the aqueous coating composition includes a water-based liquid carrier and a polyether polymer having a beta-dicarbonyl group;
- wherein the polyether polymer has a glass transition temperature of 60° C. to 150° C. and a number average molecular weight of 2,000 to 20,000;
- and
- wherein the aqueous coating composition is baked at a temperature of at least 150° C. to form the thermally-cured coating.
