Abstract
To manage multicast and unicast data transmissions. a base station receives. from a core network (CN), a multicast and/or broadcast services (MBS) downlink data packet via a downlink tunnel (602). The base station determines whether to transmit the MBS downlink data packet to a plurality of UEs via unicast or multicast. Then the base station transmits the MBS downlink data packet to a plurality of first UEs via a multicast data transmission (606), and/or transmits the MBS downlink data packet to a plurality of second UEs via a plurality of unicast data transmissions (608).
Claims20
A method in a central unit (CU) of a base station for managing multicast and unicast data transmissions, the method comprising:
- transmitting, by the CU to a distributed unit (DU) of the base station, a multicast and/or broadcast services (MBS) context setup request message to request a set-up for an MBS context, wherein the MBS context setup request message includes an MBS session identifier and one or more multicast radio bearer (MRB) IDs;
- receiving, at the CU from the DU, an MBS context setup response message in response to the MBS context setup request message;
- receiving, by the CU from a core network (CN), an MBS downlink data packet;
- and
- transmitting, by the CU, the MBS downlink data packet to the via a downlink tunnel to multicast the MBS downlink data packet to a plurality of first UEs via a multicast data transmission.
A method in a distributed unit (DU) of a base station for managing transmission of multicast and/or broadcast services (MBS), the method comprising:
- receiving, by the DU from a central unit (CU) of a base station, an MBS context setup request message to request a set-up for an MBS context, wherein the MBS context setup request message includes a first MBS session identifier and one or more multicast radio bearer (MRB) IDs;
- transmitting, by the DU to the CU, an MBS context setup response message in response to the MBS context setup request message;
- receiving, by the DU from the CU, first MBS data for a first MBS session via a first downlink tunnel;
- and
- transmitting, by the DU to a first plurality of UEs, first MBS data for the first MBS session.
A distributed unit (DU) of a base station comprising processing hardware and configured to:
- receive, from a central unit (CU) of a base station, an MBS context setup request message to request a set-up for an MBS context, wherein the MBS context setup request message includes a first MBS session identifier and one or more multicast radio bearer (MRB) IDs;
- transmit, to the CU, an MBS context setup response message in response to the MBS context setup request message;
- receive, from the CU, first MBS data for a first MBS session via a first downlink tunnel;
- and
- transmit, to a first plurality of UEs, first MBS data for the first MBS session.
