Coated silicone hydrogel contact lenses and method for making the same

A method for producing coated silicone hydrogel contact lenses, comprising the steps of:

• (1) obtaining a preformed silicone hydrogel contact lens, wherein the preformed hydrogel contact lens comprises a bulk silicone hydrogel material that comprises
• (a) repeating units of at least one polysiloxane vinylic crosslinker and/or at least one siloxane-containing vinylic monomer,
• (b) from about 0.5% to about 3.5% by weight of repeating units of at least one carboxyl-containing vinylic monomer,
• (c) repeating units of at least one hydrophilic vinylic monomer,
• (d) from about 2.5% to about 12.5% by weight of repeating units of at least one arylborono-containing vinylic monomer having an arylborono group, and
• (e) optionally but preferably at least one non-silicone vinylic crosslinker;
• and
• (2) heating the preformed silicone hydrogel contact lens in an aqueous coating solution at a temperature from about 60° C. to about 140° C. to form a coated silicone hydrogel contact lens comprising the bulk silicone hydrogel material and a non-silicone hydrogel coating thereon, wherein the aqueous coating solution comprises (a) at least one hydrophilic polymer having 1,2- and/or 1,3-diol moieties and (b) at least one water-soluble, thermally-crosslinkable hydrophilic polymeric material that is branched or slightly-crosslinked and comprises thermally crosslinkable groups and optionally reactive functional groups, wherein the thermally crosslinkable group are azetidinium groups and/or epoxide groups, wherein the reactive functional groups are primary amino groups, secondary amino groups, carboxylic acid groups, thiol groups, or combinations thereof, wherein the non-silicone hydrogel coating comprises a crosslinked polymeric material and a grafted hydrophilic polymer, wherein the crosslinked hydrophilic polymeric material is derived from said at least one water-soluble, thermally-crosslinkable hydrophilic polymeric material and is covalently attached to the bulk silicone hydrogel material through first linkages each formed between one carboxylic acid group and one azetidinium or epoxide group, wherein the grafted hydrophilic polymer is derived from said at least one hydrophilic polymer and is covalently attached to the bulk silicone hydrogel material through second linkages each formed between one arylboronoc group and one 1,2- or 1,3-diol moiety.
