This invention is directed to neuroprotective compositions and methods of using the same to treat neurodegenerative diseases.

A neuroprotective compound of formula (I):
- wherein:
- R1 is CH3, H, Br, Cl, F, I, D, NH2, OCH3, CH2CH3, CH2CH2CH3, CF3, alkyl group, or alkoxy group;
- R2 is H, CH3, CF3, Cl, F, OCF3, Br, I, NH2, OCH3, CH2CH3, CH2CH2CH3, alkyl group, alkoxy group, or SCF3;
- and R3 is H, benzene, pyridine, imidazole, pyrrole, pyrimidine, pyridine, pyridazine, pyrimidine, pyrazine, a quinolone, an isoquinoline or methyl-benzene;
- or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof.
