Abstract
The invention is directed to a surgical device which is externally used as aiming device that permits accurate placement of surgical wire to mend a supracondylar fracture. The device of the invention decreases operative time, risks of the re-dislocation through continuous manipulation, radiology exposure for both the patient and operation room staff, and to decreases anesthesia duration. It is also directed to surgical use of the device for repair of a supracondylar fracture and to methods for making it.
Claims10
A bone mending system with visual guidance groove, comprising:
- a supracondylar fracture mending device;
- and
- one or more surgical wires;
- wherein the supracondylar fracture mending device comprises:
- a handle suitable for a surgeon to steer the supracondylar fracture mending device on skin and having a longitudinal groove suitable for visual alignment of a surgical wire of the one or more surgical wires introduced into the device, wherein the longitudinal groove has a depth of from 0.1 to 0.4 mm, and
- a functional unit comprising holes A and B, and optionally C, which is suitable to hold and guide surgical wires;
- wherein the handle is about 50 to 100 mm long and has an average diameter of about 6-10 mm and wherein the handle is connected at its lower end to one side of the functional unit at an angle ranging from about 30-60 degrees;
- and
- wherein the functional unit has an anterior and a posterior side and has an average cross-sectional diameter ranging from about 15-30 mm, a vertical thickness between said anterior and posterior sides ranging from about 10-20 mm, and
- wherein the functional unit holes comprise holes A and B and optionally, C, which penetrate the anterior and posterior sides of the functional unit,
- wherein each of holes A and B, or A, B and C is about 1.6 to 2.5 mm in diameter,
- wherein holes A and B, and holes B and C, when C is present, are about 4-6 mm fixed distance from one another;
- wherein a top of each of said holes A and B, is in axial alignment with a long axis of the longitudinal groove along the anterior surface of the functional unit;
- and
- wherein a top face of the anterior side of the functional unit is flat and a bottom face of the posterior side of the functional unit has a beveled edge.
