Abstract
A method for casting a preform part for reaction bonding, the method comprising coating an inner surface of a mold and a mandrel surface with release layers. An assembled mold is formed from the mold and the mandrel and a preform cake is formed by pouring a slurry into a mold cavity and letting it settle. Thermally removing the release layers aids in removing the mandrel and removing the preform cake after pyrolyzing.
Claims17
A method for casting a preform part for reaction bonding, the method comprising:
- coating an inner surface of a mold with a first release layer;
- coating a mandrel surface with a second release layer;
- inserting said coated mandrel into said coated mold to form an assembled mold, said assembled mold comprising a mold cavity;
- pouring a slurry into said mold cavity;
- forming a preform cake by allowing said slurry to settle in said mold cavity;
- thermally removing said second release layer;
- extracting said mandrel from said assembled mold;
- pyrolyzing an organic content of said preform cake into a carbon content;
- and
- thermally removing said first release layer.
