Abstract
Porous silicon and methods for preparation and use of the same are disclosed. The porous silicon materials have utility either alone or in combination with other materials, for example, combined with carbon particles for energy storage applications.

A method for producing nano-featured porous silicon particles comprising:
- suspending particles of a silicon alloy in a liquid medium containing a dissolved acid;
- storing the suspended particles for a period of time at sufficient temperature to allow for erosion of metal cations from the silicon alloy into the liquid medium to yield porous silicon particles with nano-sized features;
- and
- removing the liquid medium to yield dried porous silicon particles with nano-sized features.
