Abstract
A fiber optic adapter assembly is provided with a floating adapter module. The adapter assembly includes a housing, an adapter module, and a single biasing member disposed in the housing and concentrically aligned with the adapter module. The single biasing member can bias the adapter module in a direction toward an end of the housing and be compressible in the opposite direction toward the other end of the housing.

A fiber optic assembly, comprising:
- an enclosure defining an interior of the enclosure and an exterior of the enclosure;
- a connector port defined by the enclosure and extending from the exterior of the enclosure to the interior of the enclosure;
- and
- an adapter assembly defining a longitudinal axis aligned with the connector port and including:
- an arrangement of a housing component and a module in which the housing component and the module abut each other, the housing component being fixed relative to the enclosure, the arrangement being positioned within the interior of the enclosure, the arrangement defining an internal cavity, the housing component having openings at opposing axial ends of the housing component, the module having openings at opposing axial ends of the module;
- a ferrule alignment sleeve positioned within the internal cavity of the arrangement and configured to receive ferrules from opposite directions along the longitudinal axis;
- and
- a compression coil spring positioned within the internal cavity of the arrangement and fully surrounding the ferrule alignment sleeve and the longitudinal axis, the spring extending along the longitudinal axis from a first end of the spring to a second end of the spring, the first end of the spring abutting an interior surface of the housing component and the second end of the spring abutting a surface of the module such that the spring is captured between the housing component and the module, the spring biasing the housing component and the module away from each other along the longitudinal axis such that the ferrule alignment sleeve is floatingly disposed within the arrangement.

- an adapter assembly defining a longitudinal axis aligned with the connector port and including:
- an arrangement of a first housing component, a second housing component, and an adapter module, the second housing component being fixed to the enclosure, the first housing component being snap connected to the second housing component, the first housing component and the adapter module being positioned within the interior of the enclosure, the adapter module being positioned within an interior of the first housing component, the first housing component having openings at opposing axial ends of the first housing component and aligned with the longitudinal axis, the second housing component having openings at opposing axial ends of the second housing component and aligned with the longitudinal axis, the adapter module having openings at opposing axial ends of the adapter module and aligned with the longitudinal axis, the adapter module including a flange extending radially away from the longitudinal axis;
- a ferrule alignment sleeve positioned within an interior of the adapter module and configured to receive ferrules from opposite directions along the longitudinal axis;
- and
- a compression coil spring positioned within the interior of the first housing component and fully surrounding the adapter module, the ferrule alignment sleeve and the longitudinal axis, the spring extending along the longitudinal axis from a first end of the spring to a second end of the spring, the first end of the spring abutting an interior surface of the first housing component and the second end of the spring abutting the flange of the adapter module such that the spring is captured between the first housing component and the adapter module, the spring biasing the housing component and the module away from each other along the longitudinal axis such that the adapter module is floatingly disposed within the first housing component,
- wherein the first housing component includes an axial stop configured to abut the flange to stop movement of the adapter module along the longitudinal axis away from the connector port.
