Abstract
Glass-based articles that include a hydrogen-containing layer extending from the surface of the article to a depth of layer. The hydrogen-containing layer includes a hydrogen concentration that decreases from a maximum hydrogen concentration to the depth of layer. The glass-based articles exhibit a high Vickers indentation cracking threshold. Glass compositions that are selected to promote the formation of the hydrogen-containing layer and methods of forming the glass-based article are also provided.
Claims12
A glass article strengthened by steam treatment, comprising:
- a surface of the glass article;
- a composition-based means for glass thereof to support a compressive stress layer from hydrogen-containing ions, the compressive stress layer extending from the surface of the glass article into the glass article to a depth of compression, wherein the depth of compression refers to the depth at which stress in the glass article changes from compressive to tensile;
- a composition-based means for glass thereof to achieve hydrogen diffusivity of the glass article at least two orders of magnitude faster than that of a first reference glass consisting of 70.05 mol % SiO2, 9.98 mol % Al2O3, and 19.97 Li2O;
- and
- a compressive stress from hydrogen-containing ions in the compressive stress layer of at least 100 MPa, wherein the depth of compression is at least 10 μm.
A glass article strengthened by steam treatment, comprising:
- a surface of the glass article;
- a composition-based means for glass thereof to support a compressive stress layer from hydrogen-containing ions, the compressive stress layer extending from the surface of the glass article into the glass article to a depth of compression, wherein the depth of compression refers to the depth at which stress in the glass article changes from compressive to tensile;
- a composition-based means for glass thereof to achieve hydrogen diffusivity of the glass article faster than that of a second reference glass consisting of 72.44 mol % SiO2,
- 8.18 mol % Al2O3, and 19.38 mol % K2O;
- and
- a compressive stress from hydrogen-containing ions in the compressive stress layer of at least 100 MPa, wherein the depth of compression is at least 10 μm.
