Abstract
An acousto-optic device includes a solid state cooler coupled to an optical element having a surface with one or more steps formed thereon; a conductive layer formed on the surface with the steps; one or more crystals secured to each step; and electrodes positioned on each surface of each crystal.
Claims20
An acousto-optic device, comprising:
- an optical element having a surface with zero or more steps formed thereon;
- a conductive layer formed on the surface with the steps;
- one or more crystals or transducers secured to the conductive layer;
- electrodes positioned on two surfaces of each crystal;
- and
- a solid-state cooler thermally coupled to the optical element receiving a laser beam, wherein the solid-state cooler is controlled by a processor coupled to a feedback sensor analyzing acoustic signals generated by an interaction of the laser beam with the optical element and the cooler including a finned heatsink with a fan forced air flow or a liquid cooled plate and wherein the cooler reduces an optical element temperature based on an sensor output from a resistance temperature detector or a thermistor, wherein each solid-state cooler is coupled to a power supply.

A method to deflect or modulate a laser beam, comprising:
- applying the laser beam to an optical element having zero or more steps each with a predetermined height and one or more crystals or transducers on the zero or more steps, wherein the predetermined heights are responsive to predetermined frequencies;
- providing an electrical input to deflect the laser at the two or more predetermined frequencies;
- and
- generating a sound field in the optical element to deflect a laser beam based on two or more predetermined frequencies;
- and
- thermally cooling the optical element with a solid-state cooler thermally coupled to the optical element receiving a laser beam, wherein the solid-state cooler is controlled by a processor coupled to a feedback sensor analyzing acoustic signals generated by an interaction of the laser beam with the optical element and the cooler including a finned heatsink with a fan forced air flow or a liquid cooled plate and wherein the cooler reduces an optical element temperature based on an sensor output from a resistance temperature detector or a thermistor, wherein each solid-state cooler is coupled to a separate power supply.

A method to deflect or modulate a laser beam of a laser, comprising:
- applying the laser beam to an optical element having one or more steps each with a predetermined height and one or more crystals or transducers on the one or more steps, wherein the predetermined heights are responsive to an input with two or more predetermined frequencies;
- providing an electrical input to deflect the laser based on two or more predetermined frequencies;
- and
- generating a sound field in the optical element to deflect a laser beam and direct the laser beam at one of two or more locations based on the electrical input;
- thermally cooling the optical element with a solid-state cooler wherein the cooler includes a finned heatsink with a fan forced air flow or a liquid cooled plate and wherein the cooler reduces an optical element temperature based on an sensor output from a resistance temperature detector or a thermistor;
- and
- operating the laser in a rugged environment.
