Abstract
A system and method for refrigerated packaging and temperature modulation is disclosed. A unique hydrogel formulation comprising a superabsorbent polymer functioning through osmosis, water-soluble binding agent, wicking agent, and an osmosis interfering agent allows a package to be cooled by regular ice without the product or container becoming wet as the ice melts. Hydrogels may be shaped into a container with ice and products placed inside of it. Several additives may be added to the hydrogel formulation to give, remove, or enhance certain properties. A number of additional applications of the inventions are disclosed including agricultural, structural cooling, home and beauty, athletic, medical, work, and other applications.
Claims20
A hydrogel composition comprising:
- a) 10-40% by dry weight, superabsorbent polymer functioning through osmosis;
- b) 5-25% by dry weight, water-soluble binding agent;
- c) 50-80% by dry weight, wicking agent;
- and
- d) less than 1% by dry weight, osmosis interfering agent
- e) wherein components (a)-(d) are combined to form the hydrogel composition.
A method of manufacturing a hydrogel, comprising:
- a) mixing a mixture of 10-40% superabsorbent polymer by dry weight, 5-25% binding agent by dry weight, 50-80% wicking agent by dry weight, <1% osmosis interfering agent by dry weight;
- and
- b) fully or partially dehydrating the mixture.
A method of manufacturing a hydrogel container, comprising;
- a) mixing a mixture of 10-40% superabsorbent polymer, 5-25% binding agent, 50-80% wicking agent, <1% osmosis interfering agent by dry weight;
- b) fully or partially dehydrating the mixture;
- and
- c) forming the mixture into a hydrogel container.
