Abstract
The present disclosure provides for latent curing accelerators as well as compositions containing such a latent curing accelerator with a substance to be cured (e.g., an epoxy resin). The latent curing accelerators comprise an amine and an encapsulant system having a polyphenol resin with at least one additional excipient. Methods of making and use are further provided.
Claims20
A latent curing accelerator composition comprising:
- an amine, and
- an encapsulant system comprising:
- a polyphenol resin, and
- an additional excipient selected from a functional component and/or a non-functional component.
The composition according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the amine is selected from [(dimethylamino)methyl]phenol, bis-[(dimethylamino)methyl]phenol, and tris-(dimethylaminomethyl)phenol (e.g., 2,4,6-tris-(dimethylaminomethyl)phenol), and combinations thereof.
The composition according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the polyphenol resin is a phenolic novolac resin (e.g., a novolac resin selected from phenol-formaldehyde and p-cresol-formaldehyde resins).
The composition according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the polyphenol resin has a molecular weight between about 5,000 D and about 30,000 D.
The composition according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the additional excipient is a functional polymeric compound, e.g., a polymeric compound containing one or more carboxy and/or hydroxy groups.
The composition according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the additional excipient is selected from one or more of a polyamide resin, a polybutadiene resin, a polyether resin, and an acrylic resin.
The composition according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the additional excipient is an acrylic resin.
The composition according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the weight ratio of the amine to the encapsulation system is about 1:0.3 to about 1:10;
- or about 1:0.3 to about 1:2;
- or about 1:0.5 to about 1:1.5;
- or about 1:0.8, or about 1:1.1, or about 1:1.4.
The composition according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the weight ratio of the polyphenol to the additional excipient is about 1:4 to about 4:1, e.g., about 1:3 to about 3:1, about 2:1 to about 1:2, or about 1:1.
The composition according to any of the preceding claims, which is combined with an epoxy resin to form a curable epoxy system, wherein the curable epoxy system does not gel after 4 weeks under accelerated aging conditions (e.g., storage for 4 weeks at 40° C.).
The composition according to any of the preceding claims, which is combined with an epoxy resin to form a curable epoxy system, wherein the curable epoxy system gives a lap shear of at least 500 psi, e.g., between about 500 psi and 1700 psi.
A method for curing a substance through use of a latent curing accelerator composition comprising
- an amine, and
- an encapsulant system comprising:
- a polyphenol resin, and
- an additional excipient selected from a functional component and/or a non-functional component;
- the method comprising the step of combining the substance with the latent curing accelerator composition and heating the resulting mixture.
