Abstract
A radiopaque embolic liquid may include two oppositely charged polyelectrolytes and a chaotropic salt in aqueous solution. Once delivered to a location containing a flow of lower osmolality medium, the polyelectrolytes can quickly undergo complex coacervation, precipitate as a hydrogel and can act as an embolic material. The resulting material is radiopaque i.e., visible in CT scan or radiographic imaging.
Claims27
A radiopaque embolic liquid, comprising in aqueous solution:
- a polyanionic polymer;
- a polycationic polymer;
- and
- a chaotropic salt at least partially dissociated into bivalent or monovalent cations and anions, where said salt is present in a concentration greater than a trigger concentration for quenching the complexation of the polyanionic polymer and the polycationic polymer,
- wherein at least one of the polyanionic polymer and the polycationic polymer comprises a radiopaque monomer.

A method of making a radiopaque embolic liquid, comprising:
- combining in aqueous solution an amount of a polyanionic polymer and an amount of a polycationic polymer with an amount of a chaotropic salt to form a polyelectrolyte solution,
- wherein the amount of chaotropic salt provides a salt concentration greater than a trigger concentration for quenching the complexation of the polyanionic polymer and the polycationic polymer, and
- wherein at least one of the polyanionic polymer and the polycationic polymer comprises a radiopaque monomer.

A radiopaque embolic liquid, comprising in aqueous solution:
- a polyanionic polymer;
- a polycationic polymer;
- and
- a chaotropic salt at least partially dissociated into bivalent or monovalent cations and anions, where said salt is present in a concentration greater than a trigger concentration for quenching the complexation of the polyanionic polymer and the polycationic polymer,
- wherein at least one of the polyanionic polymer and the polycationic polymer comprises a radiopaque monomer,
- wherein the radiopaque embolic liquid is configured to undergo coacervation and precipitate a hydrogel when disposed in a medium of lower osmolality, and
- wherein the total concentration of polyanionic polymer and polycationic polymer in the polyelectrolyte solution is about 10% w/v to about 30% w/v.
