Abstract
A plurality of computing devices are communicatively coupled to each other via a network, and each of the plurality of computing devices is operably coupled to one or more of a plurality of storage devices. The computing devices may take snapshots to store points in time coherently for a distributed storage system.

A method, the method comprising:
- taking a snapshot of a file system, in its entirety, distributed across multiple storage nodes;
- maintaining the snapshot for the file system using a plurality of tables;
- providing a constant snapshot index for a current view of the file system;
- and
- generating a pointer, to an extent in a deleted snapshot, as an object index in a next snapshot.

- a file system distributed across multiple storage nodes;

- a processor, wherein the processor is configured to:
- take a snapshot of a file system in its entirety;
- maintain the snapshot for the file system using a plurality of tables;
