Abstract
A peripheral device having one or more input devices tracks total inputs at the input devices locally and reports the total inputs to an information handling system to track health of the peripheral for reuse. Input device actuations and/or values are queued in batches of sufficient size so that communication to non-transitory memory and to the information handling system hides the values of the inputs made by an end user. The peripheral devices can include peripheral keyboards that track key inputs, peripheral mouse devices that track button presses and peripheral stylus devices that track battery charges, button presses and writing tip use.
Claims20
An information handling system comprising:
- a housing;
- a motherboard coupled in the housing;
- a processor coupled to the motherboard and operable to execute instructions that process information;
- a memory coupled to the motherboard and interfaced with the processor, the memory operable to store the instructions and information;
- a peripheral device external the housing and configured to interface information with the processor to perform input or output functions associated with the executing of the instructions;
- and
- a peripheral health monitor having instructions stored in non-transitory memory that, when executed on a processing resource cause:
- monitoring of the input or output functions;
- and
- storing health information associated with the input or output function in a queue of the non-transitory memory;
- and
- communicating the health information from the queue to a network location with an identifier of the peripheral.
A method for tracking an information handling system peripheral health state, the method comprising:
- monitoring input values performed at the peripheral;
- queueing the input values in a buffer of the peripheral until a batch of a predetermined number of input values is queued;
- and
- storing the batch of input values in non-transitory memory of the peripheral when the predetermined number of input values is queued.
A peripheral comprising:
- an input device operable to accept an end user inputs;
- a processing resource interfaced with the input device;
- a non-transitory memory interfaced with the processing resource;
- and
- instructions stored in the non-transitory memory that, when executed on the processing resource cause:
- counting of input device end user inputs in a queue;
- storing the count of input device end user inputs from the queue into the non-transitory memory in batches of a predetermined number of input device inputs;
- and
- communicating the count of input device end user inputs in batches to an information handling system with a unique identifier of the peripheral.
