Abstract
Sleep need for a user is assessed using continuous physiological data from a wearable monitor. In particular, by calculating a first sleep debt metric based on user strain and a second sleep debt metric based on accumulated sleep debt, an objective metric can be obtained that estimates an amount of sleep needed by the user in a next sleep period. This approach takes advantage of multiple modes of information embedded in the physiological data, such as a sleep and exercise patterns for a user over one or more preceding days.
Claims20
A computer program product comprising computer executable code embodied in a non-transitory computer readable medium that, when executing on one or more computing devices, performs the steps of:
- receiving physiological data from a wearable device worn substantially continuously by a user, the physiological data including photoplethysmography data;
- analyzing a sleep performance over an historical time window based on the physiological data and calculating a baseline sleep need for the user based on the sleep performance over the historical time window;
- calculating a first sleep debt metric based on an objective measure of a strain experienced by the user during an interval preceding a most recent sleep cycle, wherein the objective measure of the strain is evaluated based on at least a time series of values in the photoplethysmography data;
- calculating a second sleep debt metric as an accumulation of prior sleep debt relative to the baseline sleep need over one or more preceding sleep cycles, wherein the second sleep debt metric is scaled to minutes, and wherein the second sleep debt metric is capped at a predetermined maximum number of minutes;
- and
- calculating a sleep need for the user by summing the baseline sleep need, the first sleep debt metric, and the second sleep debt metric, and subtracting an adjustment for any naps recorded for the user following the most recent sleep cycle.
A method for determining a sleep need for a user, the method comprising:
- receiving physiological data from a wearable device worn substantially continuously by the user, the physiological data including heart rate data;
- analyzing a sleep performance over an historical time window based on the physiological data and calculating a baseline sleep need for the user based on the sleep performance over the historical time window;
- evaluating, based on the heart rate data, an objective measure of strain experienced by the user during an interval preceding a most recently sleep cycle;
- calculating a first sleep debt metric based on the objective measure of a strain;
- calculating a second sleep debt metric as an accumulation of prior sleep debt relative to the baseline sleep need over one or more preceding sleep cycles;
- and
- calculating a sleep need for the user by summing the baseline sleep need, the first sleep debt metric, and the second sleep debt metric.
A system, comprising:
- a wearable physiological monitoring device;
- and
- a processor and a memory storing computer executable code that, when executed by the processor, performs the steps of:
- receiving physiological data from the wearable physiological monitoring device while the wearable physiological monitoring device is substantially continuously worn by a user, the physiological data including heart rate data;
- analyzing a sleep performance over an historical time window based on the physiological data and calculating a baseline sleep need for the user based on the sleep performance over the historical time window;
- calculating a first sleep debt metric based on an objective measure of a strain experienced by the user during an interval preceding a most recent sleep cycle, wherein the objective measure of strain is evaluated using at least the heart rate data;
- calculating a second sleep debt metric as an accumulation of prior sleep debt relative to the baseline sleep need over one or more preceding sleep cycles;
- and
- calculating a sleep need for the user by summing the baseline sleep need, the first sleep debt metric, and the second sleep debt metric, and subtracting an adjustment for any naps recorded for the user following the most recent sleep cycle.
