Abstract
An internal combustion engine injector mounting is configured to i) secure an injector (36) to an internal combustion engine body so that the injector can inject a heated aqueous fluid and a fuel into a combustion chamber of the internal combustion engine, and ii) hold a catalyst so that the heated aqueous fluid and fuel are injected into the combustion chamber by passing through the catalyst. The catalyst is contained within the mounting to protect against oxidation by combustion processes that, in use, take place in the combustion chamber.
Claims20
An internal combustion engine comprising:
- an engine body defining a space in which a movable body moves to define a variable volume combustion chamber;
- an injector mounting body secured in an aperture that is provided in said engine body, the aperture leading into said variable volume combustion chamber;
- an injector mounted in said injector mounting body and connected with a fuel supply and an aqueous fluid supply;
- and
- a catalyst disposed in a catalyst holding space defined in said injector mounting body into which aqueous fluid and fuel output by said injector is injected,
- wherein said catalyst holding space is disposed at least substantially outside said variable volume combustion chamber in said engine body and, in use, said fuel, aqueous fluid and products of a catalytic reaction in said catalyst holding space pass from said catalyst holding space into said variable volume combustion chamber.
An internal combustion engine injector mounting comprising:
- a mounting body to be fitted to an aperture in an internal combustion engine cylinder head;
- and
- a catalyst,
- wherein said mounting body has an upstream end and a downstream end, and said upstream end is provided with an injector recess to receive at least an outlet end of an injector,
- wherein said downstream end is provided with a catalyst holding space in which said catalyst is held, and
- wherein said mounting body is provided with at least one connecting passage extending between said injector recess and said catalyst holding space so that, in use, a fluid output from said outlet end of said injector can pass into a combustion chamber that is partially defined by said cylinder head via said catalyst holding space.
An internal combustion engine comprising:
- a cylinder head that partially defines a combustion chamber;
- wherein said internal combustion engine is fitted with an injector mounting that comprises a mounting body fitted to an aperture in said cylinder head and a catalyst,
- wherein said mounting body has an upstream end and a downstream end, and wherein said upstream end is provided with an injector recess to receive at least an outlet end of an injector,
- wherein said downstream end is provided with a catalyst holding space in which said catalyst is held, and
- wherein said mounting body is provided with at least one connecting passage extending between said injector recess and said catalyst holding space so that, in use, a fluid output from said outlet end of said injector can pass into said combustion chamber via said catalyst holding space.
An internal combustion engine injector mounting, said injector mounting configured to:
- i) secure an injector to an internal combustion engine body of an internal combustion engine so that said injector can inject a heated aqueous fluid and a fuel into a combustion chamber of the internal combustion engine;
- and
- ii) hold a catalyst so that said heated aqueous fluid and fuel are injected into said combustion chamber by passing through the catalyst,
- wherein the catalyst is contained within a mounting body of the injector to protect against oxidation by combustion processes that, in use, take place in said combustion chamber.
A method of equipping an internal combustion engine to produce hydrogen:
- wherein said internal combustion comprises an engine body defining a space in which a movable body moves to define a variable volume combustion chamber;
- and
- said method comprises:
- providing an injector mounting body comprising a catalyst holding space having an outlet opening, an injector recess to receive at least an outlet end of an injector and at least one passage connecting said injector recess with said catalyst holding space so that an aqueous fluid and steam reforming fuel output from said outlet end of said injector can pass from said outlet end to said catalyst holding space,
- securing said injector mounting body to said engine body such that said injector mounting body is disposed at least substantially externally of said variable volume combustion chamber and at least said catalyst holding space is disposed in a wall so that, in use, heat produced by operation of said internal combustion engine is transferable from said wall into said catalyst holding space and said at least one passage via said injector mounting body to heat said aqueous fluid and steam reforming fuel, and
- disposing said outlet such that hydrogen produced by a catalytic reaction of said heated aqueous fluid and steam reforming fuel in said catalyst holding space can pass into said variable volume combustion chamber.
