## Abstract

Encoding or decoding syntax information associated with video information can involve identifying a coding context associated with a syntax element of a current coding unit of the video information, wherein the identifying occurs without using a syntax element of a neighboring block, and encoding or decoding the syntax element of the current coding unit based on the coding context.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method for decoding syntax information associated with video information comprising:
selecting a coding context associated with a syntax element of a coding unit of the video information, wherein the coding context is selected among two coding contexts and the selecting is based on determining an affine mode of the coding unit; and
decoding the syntax element of the coding unit based on the coding context wherein the syntax element of the coding unit comprises an adaptive motion vector resolution flag.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the syntax element of the coding unit further comprises a skip mode flag, a triangular prediction mode, a current picture referencing mode, an adaptive loop filter mode, a partitioning mode, or an affine mode.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein selecting based on determining an affine mode of the coding unit uses only an inter-affine flag.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the selecting occurs without using an adaptive motion vector resolution flag of a neighboring block of the coding unit.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the coding context is selected using an OR value of the corresponding syntax elements of a neighboring block on the left of the coding unit and of a neighboring block above the coding unit.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the coding context is selected using an AND value of the corresponding syntax elements of a neighboring block on the left of the coding unit and of a neighboring block above the coding unit.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

A non-transitory computer readable medium storing executable program instructions to cause a computer executing the instructions to perform a method according to claim 1.

### Claim 8

An apparatus for decoding syntax information associated with video information comprising:
one or more processors configured to:
select a coding context associated with a syntax element of a coding unit based on a determination of an affine mode of the coding unit, wherein the coding context is selected among two coding contexts; and
decode the syntax element of the coding unit based on the coding context wherein the syntax element of the coding unit comprises an adaptive motion vector resolution flag.

### Claim 9 (depends on 8)

The apparatus of claim 8, wherein selecting based on determining an affine mode of the coding unit uses only an inter-affine flag.

### Claim 10 (depends on 8)

The apparatus of claim 8, further comprising:
at least one of (i) an antenna configured to receive a signal, the signal including data representative of the image information, (ii) a band limiter configured to limit the received signal to a band of frequencies that includes the data representative of the image information, and (iii) a display configured to display an image from the image information.

### Claim 11 (depends on 10)

The apparatus of claim 10, wherein the apparatus comprises one of a television, a television signal receiver, a set-top box, a gateway device, a mobile device, a cell phone, a tablet, or other electronic device.

### Claim 12 (depends on 8)

The apparatus of claim 8, wherein the syntax element of the coding unit further comprises a skip mode flag, a triangular prediction mode, a current picture referencing mode, an adaptive loop filter mode, a partitioning mode, or an affine mode.

### Claim 13 (depends on 8)

The apparatus of claim 8, wherein the one or more processors being configured to select the coding context without using an adaptive motion vector resolution flag of a neighboring block of the coding unit.

### Claim 14 (depends on 8)

The apparatus of claim 8, wherein the one or more processors being configured to select the coding context using an OR value of the corresponding syntax elements of a neighboring block on the left of the coding unit and of a neighboring block above the coding unit.

### Claim 15 (depends on 8)

The apparatus of claim 8, wherein the one or more processors being configured to select the coding context using an AND value of the corresponding syntax elements of a neighboring block on the left of the coding unit and of a neighboring block above the coding unit.
