## Abstract

A method for operating a robot, including: capturing, with the at least one sensor, data of an environment and data indicative of movement of the robot; generating or updating, with the processor, a map of the environment based on at least a portion of the captured data; inferring, with the processor, a current location of the robot; and actuating, with the processor, the robot to execute a first task; wherein an application of a communication device is used by a user to schedule the first task.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method for operating a robot, comprising:
capturing, with the at least one sensor, data of an environment and data indicative of movement of the robot;
generating or updating, with the processor, a map of the environment based on at least a portion of the captured data;
inferring, with the processor, a current location of the robot; and
actuating, with the processor, the robot to execute a first task;
wherein an application of a communication device is used by a user to schedule the first task.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein:
the task comprises a transportation task of at least one item from the first location to the second location; and
the application is used to schedule delivery of the at least one item to the second location.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

The method of claim 2, wherein the robot further comprises a user interface for choosing functions, adjusting settings, and scheduling tasks.

### Claim 4 (depends on 2)

The robot of claim 2, wherein the at least one item comprises items from a grocery store, items from a retail store, or a pizza.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, further comprising:
determining, with the processor, a type of a second task to execute and a time and a day to execute the second task based on a history of types of tasks performed and times and days the types of tasks were performed by the robot; and
actuating, with the processor, the robot to execute the second task at the time and the day determined.

### Claim 6 (depends on 5)

The method of claim 5, wherein:
the processor actuates the robot to execute the second task at the time and the day determined only after receiving confirmation by the user; and
the user provides the confirmation using the application.

### Claim 7 (depends on 5)

The method of claim 5, wherein the processor learns the type of the second task to execute and the time and the day to execute the second task using reinforcement learning.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, further comprising:
actuating, with the processor, the robot to execute a particular action when the communication device is within a particular range from the robot.

### Claim 9 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, further comprising:
actuating, with the processor, the robot to navigate to a particular location within the environment based on a voice command from the user, the voice command comprising an instruction for the robot to navigate to the particular location.

### Claim 10 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the application displays an image or a video captured by an image sensor disposed on the robot.

### Claim 11 (depends on 10)

The method of claim 10, wherein at least one characteristic of an object captured in the image is provided by the user using the application.

### Claim 12 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein:
the application is further used by the user to: instruct the robot to perform a particular task in an area of the environment at a day and time and provide robot settings; and
the application displays information relating to the robot.

### Claim 13 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, further comprising:
actuating, with the processor, the robot to execute a particular action upon detecting the user entering the environment; and
the processor of the robot detects the user entering the environment based on a location of the communication device.

### Claim 14 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the robot generates a noise or illuminates lights to provide a notification to the user.

### Claim 15 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the processor is configured to actuate the robot to respond to environmental characteristics comprising at least: terrain, obstacle locations and obstacle density, elevation, and terrain and elevation transitions.

### Claim 16 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, further comprising:
inferring, with the processor, an item type of an item using image recognition; and
actuating, with the processor, the robot to perform an action based on the item type of the item.

### Claim 17 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, further comprising:
inferring, with the processor, characteristics of at least one item, the characteristics comprising one of: size, shape, fragility, bulkiness, weight, and stability.

### Claim 18

A robot for transporting items, comprising:
a chassis;
a set of wheels coupled to the chassis;
a control system to actuate movement of the set of wheels;
a power supply;
at least one sensor;
a processor; and
a tangible, non-transitory, machine readable medium storing instructions that when executed by the processor effectuates operations comprising:
capturing, with the at least one sensor, data of an environment and data indicative of movement of the robot;
generating or updating, with the processor, a map of the environment based on at least a portion of the captured data;
inferring, with the processor, a current location of the robot; and
actuating, with the processor, the robot to execute a first task;
wherein an application of a communication device is used by a user to schedule the first task.
