Quality of service flow selection for a multi-access data connection

A method performed by a user equipment (UE), the method comprising:

• communicating, using a first interface of the UE, with a mobile communication network over a first access network;
• communicating, using a second interface of the UE, with the mobile communication network over a second access network;
• sending a request message containing a first capability indicating that the UE supports measurements per quality of service (QOS) flow;
• receiving a response message containing a first indicator, the first indicator provided in response to containing the first capability in the request message, wherein the response message establishes a multi-access data connection supporting communication over the first access network and the second access network, and wherein the multi-access data connection supports a plurality of QoS flows including a default QoS flow;
• and
• sending a performance measurement function message to measure a first performance parameter for a first service data flow, wherein the first service data flow is transmitted on a target QoS flow from the plurality of QoS flows of the multi-access data connection, and wherein:
• the performance measurement function message is transmitted on the target QoS flow of the multi-access data connection in response to the first indicator containing a first value;
• and
• the performance measurement function message is transmitted on the default QoS flow of the multi-access data connection in response to the first indicator containing a second value.

An apparatus for performing a network function, the apparatus comprising:

• at least one memory;
• and
• at least one processor coupled with the at least one memory and configured to cause the apparatus to:
• communicate with a plurality of network functions in a mobile communication network and with a user equipment (UE);
• receive a request message from the UE containing a first capability, the request message requesting a multi-access data connection supporting communication over a first access network and a second access network;
• determine based on the first capability whether the UE supports measurements per quality of service (QoS) flow;
• and
• in response to determining that the UE supports measurements per QoS flow:
• select a user plane function;
• send a session establishment request message containing a second indicator to the user plane function, wherein the second indicator indicates whether the user plane function must perform access measurements per QoS flow over the multi-access data connection;
• and
• send a response message containing a first indicator to the UE, wherein the response message establishes the multi-access data connection and wherein the first indicator indicates that the UE must perform access measurements per QoS flow over the multi-access data connection.

A processor for wireless communication, comprising:

• at least one controller coupled with at least one memory and configured to cause the processor to:
• communicate with a mobile communication network over a first access network;
• communicate with the mobile communication network over a second access network;
• send a request message containing a first capability indicating that the processor supports measurements per QoS flow;
• receive a response message containing a first indicator, the first indicator provided in response to containing the first capability in the request message, wherein the response message establishes a multi-access data connection supporting communication over the first access network and the second access network, and wherein the multi-access data connection supports a plurality of QoS flows including a default QoS flow;
• and
• send a performance measurement function message to measure a first performance parameter for a first service data flow, wherein the first service data flow is transmitted on a target QoS flow from the plurality of QoS flows of the multi-access data connection, and wherein:
• the performance measurement function message is transmitted on the target QoS flow of the multi-access data connection in response to the first indicator containing a first value;
• and
• the performance measurement function message is transmitted on the default QoS flow of the multi-access data connection in response to the first indicator containing a second value.
