Abstract
Systems, apparatuses, and methods are described for thermal fuse circuit breakers. The thermal fuses described herein may be disposed in a connector, so that, should an overheating condition occur, for example, due to an arc discharge across or inside of the connector, the heat of the arc discharge melts a portion of the fuse, thereby preventing a potentially catastrophic event, such as fire, or damage to a component which may be more expensive than the thermal fuse itself.
Claims20
An apparatus for thermal disconnection comprising:
- a first conductor;
- a second conductor;
- a spring;
- and
- a low melting temperature alloy located between the first conductor and the second conductor;
- wherein when the apparatus is in a closed configuration:
- the spring is in a state of storing potential energy, and the first conductor and the second conductor are electrically connected via the low melting temperature alloy;
- wherein when the apparatus is in an open configuration:
- the first conductor and the second conductor are electrically isolated, and the spring is in an undeformed state;
- and
- wherein in response to a temperature increase above a melting temperature of the low melting temperature alloy, the apparatus is configured to transition from the closed configuration to the open configuration.

A system comprising:
- an inverter;
- at least one photovoltaic (PV) panel electrically connected to the inverter;
- a plurality of cables and a plurality of connectors, wherein the plurality of cables and the plurality of connectors electrically connect the at least one PV panel to the inverter;
- wherein at least one connector of the plurality of connectors comprises:
- a first conductor;
- a second conductor;
- a spring;
- and
- a low melting temperature alloy located between the first conductor and the second conductor,
- wherein when the at least one connector is in a closed configuration:
- the spring is in a state of storing potential energy, and the first conductor and the second conductor are electrically connected via the low melting temperature alloy;
- wherein when the at least one connector is in an open configuration:
- the first conductor and the second conductor are electrically isolated, and the spring is in an undeformed state;
- and
- wherein in response to a temperature increase above a melting temperature of the low melting temperature alloy, the at least one connector is configured to transition from the closed configuration to the open configuration.
