Abstract
Adjusting storage capacity in a computing system that includes a computing device configured to send access requests to a storage device characterized by a first storage capacity, including: reducing data; determining, in dependence upon an amount of storage capacity saved by reducing the data, an updated storage capacity for the storage device; and exporting an updated storage capacity to the computing device.

A method comprising:
- receiving, by a storage controller, data to be stored in a storage array characterized by a total storage capacity;
- obtaining, by the storage controller from the storage array, an updated storage capacity based on an amount of capacity that would be saved by the storage array reducing the data;
- and
- representing, to another computing device, the updated storage capacity for the storage array.
A storage system that includes one or more storage devices, a computer processor, and a computer memory, the computer memory including computer program instructions that when executed by the computer processor cause the storage system to carry out the steps of:
- receiving, by a storage controller, data to be stored in a storage array characterized by a total storage capacity;
- obtaining, by the storage controller from the storage array, an updated storage capacity based on an amount of capacity that would be saved by the storage array reducing the data;
- and
- representing, to another computing device, the updated storage capacity for the storage array.
A computer program product disposed upon a computer readable medium, the computer program product comprising computer program instructions that, when executed, carry out the steps of:
- receiving, by a storage controller, data to be stored in a storage array characterized by a total storage capacity;
- obtaining, by the storage controller from the storage array, an updated storage capacity based on an amount of capacity that would be saved by the storage array reducing the data;
- and
- representing, to another computing device, the updated storage capacity for the storage array.
