Abstract
Provided herein are culture medium, methods and systems to culture cells of an aquatic animal to increase lipid uptake, cell viability and/or cell differentiation in presence of one or more lipids at a concentration of at least 10 μg/ml, and cells obtainable and obtained thereby, related cell biomass and food products. Also provided herein are culture medium, methods and systems to culture cells of a terrestrial animal to increase lipid uptake, cell viability and/or cell differentiation in presence of one or more lipids at a concentration of at least 10 μg/ml, and cells obtainable and obtained thereby, related cell biomass and food products.
Claims45
A cultured cell of an animal, wherein the cultured cell has a) less saturated fat (SFA) content (g saturated fat/g total fat), and/or b) greater unsaturated fat (UFA) content (g polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) and/or monounsaturated fat (MUFA)/g total fat), each of a) and b) in comparison to a wild caught or farm-raised animal of the same species as the cultured cells.

A method for culturing a cell, the method comprising culturing the cell of an animal in a culture medium comprising at least 0.1 μg/ml of one or more monounsaturated fatty acids for a time and under condition allowing uptake of the monounsaturated fatty acid by the cell of the animal.

A culture medium, for a cell of an animal, the culture medium comprising a cell basal medium for a cell of an animal supplemented with at least 0.1 μg/ml or 10 μg/ml of a lipid, wherein when the lipid comprises one or more polyunsaturated fatty acids, one or more saturated fatty acids, and/or one or more sterols the culture medium further comprises a nervonic acid in a concentration of at least 0.1 μg/ml or 10 μg/ml.

A method for culturing a cell of an animal, the method comprising
- culturing the cell of an animal in a culture medium comprising at least 0.1 μg/ml or 10 μg/ml of a lipid, the culturing performed for a time and under condition allowing uptake of a fatty acid of the lipid by the cell of the animal, wherein when the lipid comprises one or more polyunsaturated fatty acids, one or more saturated fatty acids, and/or one or more sterols, wherein the culture medium further comprises a nervonic acid in a concentration of at least 0.1 μg/ml or 10 μg/ml.
