Invitation media overlays for private collections of media content items

A system comprising:

• a processor;
• and
• a memory having instructions stored thereon, when executed by the processor, causes the system to perform operations comprising:
• causing a modified first media content item to be displayed by a second client device, the modified media content item comprising a first media content item received from a first client device and an invitation media overlay inviting a second user of the second client device to join a private group having access to a private collection of media content items that can only be modified by a first user associated with the first client device;
• receiving a selection of the invitation media overlay from the second client device;
• and
• causing the private collection of media content items to be displayed by the second client device.

A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium having stored thereon instructions, when executed by a processor, causes the processor to perform operations comprising:

• causing a modified first media content item to be displayed by a second client device, the modified media content item comprising a first media content item received from a first client device and an invitation media overlay inviting a second user of the second client device to join a private group having access to a private collection of media content items that can only be modified by a first user associated with the first client device;
• receiving a selection of the invitation media overlay from the second client device;
• and
• causing the private collection of media content items to be displayed by the second client device.
