System and method for identifying altered content

A method comprising:

• comparing a content item to a verified content item to identify an altered portion in the content item;
• retrieving criteria indicative of acceptable alterations;
• determining, based on the retrieved criteria indicative of acceptable alterations, whether the altered portion comprises an acceptable alteration;
• and
• in response to determining that the altered portion comprises the acceptable alteration, storing indicator data indicating that the content item comprises the altered portion and that the altered portion is acceptable, wherein a representation of the indicator data is provided for display with the content item.

A system comprising:

• memory configured to store data associated with content;
• and
• control circuitry configured to:
• compare a content item to a verified content item to identify an altered portion in the content item;
• retrieve criteria indicative of acceptable alterations;
• determine, based on the retrieved criteria indicative of acceptable alterations, whether the altered portion comprises an acceptable alteration;
• and
• in response to determining that the altered portion comprises the acceptable alteration, store, in the memory, indicator data indicating that the content item comprises the altered portion and that the altered portion is acceptable, wherein a representation of the indicator data is provided for display with the content item.
