Abstract
The disclosure relates to a functional article made from a functional composition that includes a polymer, functional metal, and halide salt, wherein the functional article possesses both a functional property (e.g., antimicrobial properties) and a desirable color and/or opacity.
Claims25
A functional article comprising a composition comprising:
- a polymer;
- copper oxide;
- and
- a halide salt;
- wherein the molar ratio of halide salt to copper oxide in the composition is about 0.01 to about 100;
- and wherein the article has an enhanced property selected from at least one of the following properties as compared to an article comprising a composition that differs only by the absence of the halide salt:
- (a) a color difference measured as DECMC of more than 0.5 units;
- (b) increased antimicrobial efficacy;
- (c) reduced opacity;
- (d) reduced haze;
- and
- (e) increased whiteness.

A compound comprising:
- a thermoplastic;
- copper oxide;
- and
- a halide salt;
- wherein the molar ratio of halide salt to copper oxide in the compound is about 0.01 to about 100.
2 more elements
A method of producing an antimicrobial article, comprising:
- (a) preparing a composition comprising:
- (i) a thermoplastic or thermoset polymer;
- (ii) copper oxide;
- (iii) and a halide salt;
- wherein the composition exhibits at least a 1 log reduction in concentration of Escherichia coli using a modified ISO 22196 test method;
- and
- (b) forming an antimicrobial article from the composition.
