Abstract

Techniques for implementing a vehicle computing device to determine a time horizon for a prediction are described herein. For example, the techniques may include the vehicle computing device receiving sensor data from a sensor and using the sensor data to determine an amount of time in the future to make a prediction associated with an autonomous vehicle in a real-world environment or a simulated environment. The vehicle computing device can select or otherwise determine to use a model that is associated with a time period similar to the time horizon and output the prediction using the model. The vehicle computing device can transition between models as the autonomous vehicle navigates in an environment to predict potential interactions with an object in the environment as various times in the future.

A system comprising:

one or more processors;
and
one or more non-transitory computer-readable media storing instructions executable by the one or more processors, wherein the instructions, when executed, cause the one or more processors to perform operations comprising:
receiving, from a sensor associated with an autonomous vehicle, sensor data associated with an environment;
determining, by a planning component of the autonomous vehicle and based at least in part on the sensor data, a temporal length of a time horizon for prediction associated with the autonomous vehicle and the environment wherein the temporal length is variable;
determining, by the planning component, within the time horizon, multiple discrete predictions associated with the autonomous vehicle and the environment;
determining, by the planning component and based at least in part on the multiple discrete predictions, an action for the autonomous vehicle;
and
controlling the autonomous vehicle based at least in part on the action.
