A method of treating a subject having a medical condition associated with a pathogenic microorganism, the method comprising:
- (i) topically administering to said subject a potentiating effective amount of gaseous nitric oxide (gNO);
- and
- (ii) administering to said subject a therapeutically effective amount of an antimicrobial agent, wherein said antimicrobial agent is other than said gNO.
A method of treating a subject having a medical condition associated with a pathogenic microorganism in which an antimicrobial resistance has been uncovered following treating said subject with said antimicrobial agent, the method comprising:
- (i) topically administering to said subject, following a treatment with said antimicrobial agent and uncovering said antimicrobial resistance, a re-sensitizing effective amount of gaseous nitric oxide (gNO);
- (ii) administering to said subject a therapeutically effective amount of said antimicrobial agent,
- wherein said antimicrobial agent is other than said gNO and said re-sensitizing effective amount of said gNO is lower than a therapeutically effective amount of said gNO with respect to said microorganism.
A method for sensitizing or re-sensitizing a microorganism to an antimicrobial agent, comprising:
- (i) contacting said microorganism with a sensitizing or re-sensitizing effective amount of gaseous nitric oxide (gNO) by topical administration;
- and
- (ii) contacting said microorganism with a therapeutically effective amount of said antimicrobial agent,
- wherein said antimicrobial agent is other than said gNO and said sensitizing or re-sensitizing effective amount being lower than a therapeutically effective amount of said gNO with respect to said pathogenic microorganism.
