Abstract
A fiber optic cable and connector assembly including a fiber optic connector mounted at the end of a fiber optic cable. The fiber optic connector includes a ferrule assembly including a stub fiber supported within a ferrule. The stub fiber is fusion spliced to an optical fiber of the fiber optic cable at a location within the fiber optic connector.

(canceled)
A splicing tray comprising:
- a tray body including a length, a width, and a height;
- a main slot that extends along the length of the tray body for receiving arc electrodes;
- the tray body having a side recess that reduces a width of the tray body adjacent a splicing zone between the arc electrodes;
- alignment structures on opposites sides of the main slot for aligning optical fibers desired to be spliced;
- and
- contaminant reducing slots that extend along the length of the tray body at locations between the main slot and the alignment structures.
A method for splicing a fiber optic connector to a fiber optic cable, the fiber optic connector including a ferrule, a first optical fiber secured to the ferrule, and a connector body, the cable including a second optical fiber, the method comprising:
- fusion splicing the first optical fiber to the second optical fiber;
- and
- shielding the ferrule during the fusion splicing.
A multi-fiber connector comprising:
- a multi-fiber ferrule having a front end and a rear end;
- a plurality of first optical fibers having front portions secured within the multi-fiber ferrule and rear portions that project rearwardly from the rear end of the multi-fiber ferrule;
- and
- a plurality of second optical fibers spliced to the first optical fibers at splice locations within 10 millimeters of the rear end of the multi-fiber ferrule.
