Abstract
The present invention relates to fibers comprising polyesteramide co-polymers and a bioactive agent. The present invention also relates to the fibers for use in medical applications especially for use in the delivery of bioactive agents. In an embodiment, a fiber degrades hydrolytically at physiological conditions via bulk erosion.

A method comprising the step of treating a condition associated with the eye in a patient suffering therefrom by degrading hydrolytically via bulk erosion a fiber implanted in the patient, the fiber comprising a bioactive agent and a biodegradable poly(esteramide) copolymer (PEA) according to structural Formula (IV),
- wherein
- m+p is from 0.9 to 0.1 and q is from 0.1 to 0.9;
- m+p+q=1, whereby m and p are each greater than 0;
- n is about 5 to about 300;
- a is at least 0.05, b is at least 0.05, a+b=1, qa=q*a, and qb=q*b;
- wherein units of m, units of p, units of qa, and units of qb are all randomly distributed throughout the copolymer;
- R1 is (C2-C20) alkylene;
- R3 and R4 may be the same or different and are each selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, —CH3, —CH(CH3)2, —CH(CH3)—CH2—CH3, —CH2—CH(CH3)2, —CH2—C6H5, (CH3)2CH—CH2—, and —(CH2)2S(CH3);
- R5 is (C2-C20)alkylene;
- R6 is according to structural Formula (III);
- R7 is (C6-C10)aryl(C1-C6)alkylene;
- and
- R8 is (C2-C20)alkylene.
