Data storage device with configurable policy-based storage device behavior

An apparatus comprising:

• a storage device;
• a device controller operatively coupled with the storage device, comprising a memory;
• an application stored on the memory and comprising instructions that, when executed, direct the device controller to at least:
• receive a storage request to store content on the storage device;
• retrieve a storage device policy from the memory that indicates a set of storage locations on the storage device;
• select one of the storage locations on the storage device based on the storage device policy;
• store the content on the storage device at the selected storage location;
• record storage information for the content that indicates the selected location on the memory;
• receive a content request comprising a content identifier for the content;
• in response to the content request, retrieve the storage information for the content;
• retrieve the content from the storage device based on the storage information;
• and
• transfer the content.

An apparatus comprising:

• a storage device;
• a device controller operatively coupled with the storage device, comprising a memory;
• an application stored on the memory and comprising instructions that, when executed, direct the device controller to at least:
• receive a storage request to store content on the storage device;
• retrieve a storage device policy from the memory that indicates a set of storage locations on the storage device and a recording method for writing the content to the storage device;
• select one of the storage locations on the storage device based on the storage device policy;
• store the content on the storage device at the selected storage location using the recording method;
• and
• record storage information for the content that indicates the selected location on the memory.

An apparatus comprising:

• a storage device;
• a device controller operatively coupled with the storage device, comprising a memory;
• an application stored on the memory and comprising instructions that, when executed direct the device controller to at least:
• receive a storage request to store content on the storage device;
• retrieve a storage device policy from the memory that indicates a set of storage locations on the storage device and a recording method for writing the content to the storage device;
• select one of the storage locations on the storage device based on the storage device policy;
• store the content on the storage device at the selected storage location;
• and
• record storage information for the content that indicates the selected location on the memory;
• receive a content request comprising a content identifier for the content;
• in response to the content request, retrieve the storage information for the content;
• retrieve the content from the storage device based on the storage information;
• and
• transfer the content.

An apparatus comprising:

• a storage device;
• a device controller operatively coupled with the storage device and comprising a memory, the device controller configured to receive content to be stored on the storage device;
• a programmable processor configured to implement a storage device policy that indicates a set of storage locations on the storage device;
• the programmable processor communicatively coupled with the device controller wherein the content received by the device controller is processed by the programmable processor;
• and
• an application stored on the memory and comprising instructions that, when executed, direct the device controller to select one of the storage locations and store the content at the selected storage location on the storage device after the content has been processed by the programmable processor.

An apparatus comprising:

• a storage device;
• a device controller operatively coupled with the storage device, comprising a memory;
• an application stored on the memory and comprising instructions that, when executed, direct the device controller to at least:
• receive a storage request to store a first content and a second content on the storage device;
• retrieve a storage device policy from the memory that indicates a set of storage locations on the storage device;
• select a first one of the storage locations based on the content type of the first content and select a second one of the storage locations based on the content type of the second content;
• and
• store the first content at the first selected storage location on the storage device and store the second content at the second selected storage location on the storage device.
