Abstract
Methods, systems, and apparatuses detect and mitigate a stall condition in an iterative decoder. A codeword is received and one or more of the plurality of bits in the codeword are flipped by a bit flipping decoder in each of a plurality of error correction iterations. In response to detecting a stall condition in the plurality of error correction iterations, a maximum stop condition is increased. The maximum stop condition is a maximum iteration count threshold or a maximum decoding time threshold. The maximum stop condition triggers a stopping of the bit flipping decoder if the codeword is not decoded when the maximum stop condition is satisfied.
Claims20
A method comprising:
- receiving a codeword from a memory device, the codeword including a plurality of bits;
- setting a default stop condition, the default stop condition triggering a bit flipping decoder to stop performing an error correction iteration of a plurality of error correction iterations during a decoding of the codeword, wherein the default stop condition is an iteration count threshold or a time allocated to decoding the codeword;
- flipping, by the bit flipping decoder, one or more of the plurality of bits in the codeword in each of the plurality of error correction iterations;
- detecting, by the bit flipping decoder, a stall condition in the plurality of error correction iterations;
- increasing, by the bit flipping decoder, the default stop condition in response to detecting the stall condition, wherein the increased default stop condition is an increased iteration count threshold or an increased time allocated to decoding the codeword;
- and
- flipping, by the bit flipping decoder, bits in the codeword in an additional plurality of error correction iterations, wherein the increased default stop condition triggers the additional plurality of error correction iterations.
A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium comprising instructions that, when executed by a processing device, cause the processing device to:
- receive a codeword from a memory device, the codeword including a plurality of bits;
- set a default stop condition, the default stop condition triggering a bit flipping decoder to stop performing an error correction iteration of a plurality of error correction iterations during a decoding of the codeword, wherein the default stop condition is an iteration count threshold or a time allocated to decoding the codeword;
- flip, by the bit flipping decoder, one or more of the plurality of bits in the codeword in each of the plurality of error correction iterations;
- detect, by the bit flipping decoder, a stall condition in the plurality of error correction iterations;
- increase, by the bit flipping decoder, the default stop condition in response to detecting the stall condition, wherein the increased default stop condition is an increased iteration count threshold or an increased time allocated to decoding the codeword;
- and
- flip, by the bit flipping decoder, bits in the codeword in an additional plurality of error correction iterations, wherein the increased default stop condition triggers the additional plurality of error correction iterations.
A system comprising:
- a memory device;
- and
- a processing device, operatively coupled with the memory device, to:
- receive a codeword from a memory device, the codeword including a plurality of bits;
- setting a default stop condition, the default stop condition triggering a bit flipping decoder to stop performing an error correction iteration of a plurality of error correction iterations during a decoding of the codeword, wherein the default stop condition is an iteration count threshold or a time allocated to decoding the codeword;
- flip, using the bit flipping decoder, one or more of the plurality of bits in the codeword in each of the plurality of error correction iterations;
- detect, by the bit flipping decoder, a stall condition in the plurality of error correction iterations;
- increase, by the bit flipping decoder, the default stop condition in response to detecting the stall condition, wherein the increased default stop condition is an increased iteration count threshold or an increased time allocated to decoding the codeword;
- and
- flip, by the bit flipping decoder, bits in the codeword in an additional plurality of error correction iterations, wherein the increased default stop condition triggers the additional plurality of error correction iterations.
