Abstract
A glass has a basic soda-lime-silica glass portion, and a colorant portion, the colorant portion including total iron as Fe2O3 in the range of at least 0.02 to no more than 0.10 weight percent, a redox ratio in the range of 0.20 to 0.6, and tin metal providing tin in an amount within the range of greater than 0.005 to 5.0 weight percent; the glass product has a tin side and an opposite air side, said tin side of the glass having a higher concentration of tin than the air side, the air side having a uniform concentration of tin from the air side of the glass product towards the tin side of the glass product.
Claims20
A glass, comprising:
- a basic soda-lime-silica glass portion, wherein the basic soda-lime-silica glass portion comprises:
- SiO2
- 65-80 wt. %
- Na2O
- 10-20 wt. %
- CaO
- 5-15 wt. %
- MgO
- 0-8 wt. %
- Al2O3
- 0-5 wt. %
- K2O
- 0-5 wt. %;
- a colorant portion;
- total iron as Fe2O3 in the range of 0.02 to 0.10 weight percent;
- a redox ratio in the range of 0.20 to 0.6, and
- tin metal providing tin in an amount within the range of greater than 0.005 to 5.0 weight percent;
- wherein the glass product has a tin side and an opposite air side, said tin side of the glass having a higher concentration of tin than the air side, the air side having a uniform concentration of tin from the air side of the glass product towards the tin side of the glass product.
A method of making a glass using a conventional float non-vacuum glass system, comprising
- melting a sand, soda ash, a limestone, a dolomite, and a tin in the following ratios:
- soda ash:sand
- 0.2 to 0.4:1
- limestone
- 0.04 to 0.1:1
- dolomite
- 0.1 to 0.4:1
- Tin
- 0.00007 to 0.04:1
- thereby forming a pool of molten glass;
- flowing the pool of molten glass onto a molten tin bath;
- moving the molten glass on the surface of the molten tin bath, while controllably cooling the molten glass and applying forces to the molten glass to provide a glass of a desired thickness;
- and
- removing the glass from the molten tin bath.
