Abstract
Systems and methods for providing colorblind-accessible versions of a color image by generating a color translation table for color vision deficiency (CVD) corrections are disclosed. For a given image, the pixel values as would be seen by a colorblind user are determined. Using these values, a corrected rendered image that appears to colorblind users as depicting a similar color scheme as the original image is produced and presented to the colorblind user. The proposed systems can be implemented with previously captured image data, real-time video, and as an add-on to other applications.

A method of generating a color translation table for color vision deficiency (CVD) correction comprising:
- selecting a plurality of source color values;
- for each of the source color values, identifying a respective estimated color value associated with the source color value, the estimated color value being a simulation of the source color value as it would be perceived by the user with CVD;
- associating each estimated color value with its respective source color value;
- generating the color translation table by:
- selecting a plurality of target color values;
- for each target color value included in the plurality of target color values, determining respective color distances from each of the estimated color values;
- for each target color value in the plurality of target color values, identifying one of the source color values associated with one of the estimated color values having a smallest color distance from the target color value;
- and
- storing associations between each of the target color values and respective identified source color values to provide the color translation table between the source color values and the target color values to be substituted for the source color values in a display on a display device corrected for the user with CVD;
- and
- utilizing the color translation table to convert colors in a source image to corrected colors for display for the user with CVD on the display device.
A machine-readable medium including instructions therein which, when executed by a processor, causes the processor, alone or in combination with other processors, to perform the following functions for generating a color translation table for color vision deficiency (CVD) correction:
- selecting a plurality of source color values;
- for each of the source color values, identifying a respective estimated color value associated with the source color value, the estimated color value being a simulation of the source color value as it would be perceived by the user with CVD;
- associating each estimated color value with its respective source color value;
- generating the color translation table by:
- selecting a plurality of target color values;
- for each target color value included in the plurality of target color values, determining respective color distances from each of the estimated color values;
- for each target color value in the plurality of target color values, identifying one of the source color values associated with one of the estimated color values having a smallest color distance from the target color value;
- and
- storing associations between each of the target color values and respective identified source color values to provide the color translation table between the source color values and the target color values to be substituted for the source color values in a display on a display device corrected for the user with CVD;
- and
- utilizing the color translation table to convert colors in a source image to corrected colors for display for the user with CVD on the display device.
A system for generating a color translation table for color vision deficiency (CVD) correction comprising:
- a processor;
- and
- a memory, coupled to the processor, configured to store executable instructions that, when executed by the processor, alone or in combination with other processors, cause the processor to:
- select a plurality of source color values;
- for each of the source color values, identify a respective estimated color value associated with the source color value, the estimated color value being a simulation of the source color value as it would be perceived by the user with CVD;
- associate each estimated color value with its respective source color value;
- generate the color translation table by:
- selecting a plurality of target color values;
- for each target color value included in the plurality of target color values, determining respective color distances from each of the estimated color values;
- for each target color value in the plurality of target color values, identifying one of the source color values associated with one of the estimated color values having a smallest color distance from the target color value;
- and
- storing associations between each of the target color values and respective identified source color values to provide the color translation table between the source color values and the target color values to be substituted for the source color values in a display on a display device corrected for the user with CVD;
- and
- utilize the color translation table to convert colors in a source image to corrected colors for display for the user with CVD on the display device.
