Configuration of new storage devices in a storage device pool

A data storage system, comprising:

• a plurality of data storage devices each comprising a non-volatile memory (NVM);
• means for receiving optimization information from at least one source data storage device of the plurality of data storage devices, wherein the optimization information comprises at least one optimization learned by the at least one source data storage device while part of the data storage system;
• and
• means for configuring a new data storage device for the data storage system with the at least one device optimization.

A data storage device, comprising:

• a non-volatile memory (NVM);
• and
• a processor coupled to the NVM and configured to:
• receive optimization information from a storage management device coupled to a plurality of pooled data storage devices including the data storage device and at least one source data storage device, wherein the optimization information comprises at least one optimization learned by the at least one source data storage device while coupled to the storage management device;
• and
• configure the data storage device to include the at least one device optimization.
