Technologies for expanded beam optical connector

An apparatus comprising:

• a substrate comprising a top surface;
• a lens array comprising a plurality of lenses;
• a plurality of waveguides, wherein at least part of individual waveguides of the plurality of waveguides extend in a plane parallel to the top surface, wherein individual waveguides of the plurality of waveguides direct light through a lens of the plurality of lenses;
• and
• means for determining a position of the lens array relative to the substrate.

A method comprising:

• positioning a lens array at an edge of a substrate, wherein a plurality of waveguides are on or near a top surface of the substrate, wherein the lens array comprises a plurality of lenses;
• sending light through one or more of the plurality of waveguides;
• detecting light from one or more of the plurality of waveguides that passed through the lens array;
• and
• determining an indication of a position of the lens array relative to the plurality of waveguides based on the detected light from one or more of the plurality of waveguides that passed through the lens array.
