Abstract
A hanger for connecting a structural component to a wall that can have sheathing mounted thereon either before or after the hanger is connected to the wall. The hanger includes a channel-shaped portion configured to receive the structural component. An extension portion extends from the channel-shaped portion and is configured to extend through the sheathing to engage the wall at a first location. A connection portion is configured for attachment to the wall at a second location spaced from the first location.

A fire wall hanger for connecting a structural component to a fire separation wall, the fire separation wall including a top plate, studs extending down from the top plate, and two layers of ⅝-inch-thick drywall attached to the top plate and the studs, the fire wall hanger comprising:
- a channel-shaped portion sized and shaped to receive the structural component, the channel-shaped portion including a base having an upper surface arranged to contact the structural component, the upper surface lying in a base plane;
- a connection portion including a top flange and a back flange, the top flange arranged to contact a horizontal top surface of the top plate of the fire separation wall, the back flange arrange to contact a vertical face of the top plate of the fire separation wall, the back flange having a front surface lying in a back flange plane, the top flange extending in a direction rearwardly away from the channel-shaped portion and extending rearward of the back flange, the connection portion and the channel-shaped portion being rigidly fixed with respect to one another, the connection portion and the channel-shaped portion being in a spaced apart relation relative to one another;
- a first extension flange interconnecting the connection portion and the channel-shaped portion, the first extension flange being directly connected to the channel-shaped portion by a first connection, the first connection having an upper end and a lower end, the first connection extending from the upper end to the lower end in a first direction, the first direction being perpendicular to the base plane;
- and
- a second extension flange interconnecting the connection portion and the channel-shaped portion, the second extension flange being directly connected to the channel-shaped portion by a second connection, the second connection having an upper end and a lower end, the second connection extending from the upper end of the second connection to the lower end of the second connection in a second direction, the second direction being perpendicular to the base plane;
- wherein the back flange plane, the first extension flange and the channel-shaped portion bound a drywall space sized and shaped to receive the two layers of ⅝-inch-thick drywall therein;
- wherein the first and second extension flanges are arranged to brace the channel-shaped portion along the respective first and second connections to inhibit the channel-shaped portion from moving toward the connection portion and damaging the two layers of ⅝-inch-thick drywall when the fire wall hanger is installed on the fire separation wall and the channel-shaped portion is supporting the structural component.
A fire wall hanger for connecting a structural component to a fire separation wall, the fire separation wall including a top plate, studs extending down from the top plate, and two layers of ⅝-inch-thick drywall attached to the top plate and studs, the fire wall hanger comprising:
- a channel-shaped portion sized and shaped to receive the structural component, the channel-shaped portion including a base having an upper surface arranged to contact the structural component and first and second side walls extending upward from opposite edges of the base, the upper surface of the base lying in a base plane, the first side wall lying in a first side wall plane and the second side wall lying in a second side wall plane;
- a connection portion including a back flange, the back flange arranged to contact a vertical face of the top plate of the fire separation wall, the back flange having a front surface lying in a back flange plane, the connection portion and the channel-shaped portion being rigidly fixed with respect to one another, the connection portion and the channel-shaped portion being in a spaced apart relation relative to one another, the back flange having a lateral extent perpendicular to the first and second side wall planes, the back flange extending laterally from a location between the first and second side wall planes to a location laterally outward from the first and second side wall planes;
- and
- an extension flange interconnecting the connection portion and the channel-shaped portion, the extension flange being directly connected to the channel-shaped portion by a first connection, the first connection having an upper end and a lower end, the first connection extending from the upper end to the lower end in a first direction, the first direction being perpendicular to the base plane;
- wherein the back flange plane, the extension flange and the channel-shaped portion bound a drywall space sized and shaped to receive the two layers of ⅝-inch-thick drywall therein;
- wherein the extension flange is arranged to brace the channel-shaped portion along the first connection to inhibit the channel-shaped portion from moving toward the connection portion and damaging the two layers of ⅝-inch-thick drywall when the fire wall hanger is installed on the fire separation wall and the channel-shaped portion is supporting the structural component.
A fire wall assembly comprising:
- a stud frame wall having a top plate and studs extending downward away from the top plate, the stud frame wall having a front face and an opposite rear face, the top plate having a top surface;
- fire retardant sheathing mounted on the front face of the stud frame wall, the fire retardant sheathing comprising a first drywall panel and a second drywall panel, the first and second drywall panels each being ⅝-inch-thick, the first drywall panel having a front face and an opposite rear face, the rear face of the first drywall panel in contact with the front face of the stud frame wall, the second drywall panel having a front face and an opposite rear face, the rear face of the second drywall panel in contact with the front face of the first drywall panel, the fire retardant sheathing having an opening extending through the fire retardant sheathing from the front face second drywall panel to the rear face of the first drywall panel, the fire retardant sheathing having opposing first and second surfaces bounding opposite first and second sides of the opening, the first and second drywall panels forming the first and second surfaces of the fire retardant sheathing;
- and
- a fire wall hanger comprising:
- a channel-shaped portion sized and shaped to receive a structural component, the channel-shaped portion including a base arranged to receive an end portion of the structural component thereon to support the structural component, the base having an upper surface arranged to contact the structural component;
- a connection portion mounted on and in contact with the top plate of the stud frame wall, the connection portion in contact with the top surface of the top plate, the connection portion including a back flange in contact with the top plate of the stud frame wall;
- and
- an extension portion extending through the opening in the fire retardant sheathing, the extension portion having opposite first and second side faces, the first side face forming a first outer side of the extension portion and the second side face forming an opposite second outer side of the extension portion, the first side face being in opposed, facing relation with the first surface of the fire retardant sheathing from the front face of the second drywall panel to the rear face of the first drywall panel, the second side face being in opposed, facing relation with the second surface of the fire retardant sheathing from the front face of the second drywall panel to the rear face of the first drywall panel, the extension portion including an extension flange extending from the channel-shaped portion to the back flange of the connection portion, the extension flange forming the first side face;
