Abstract
The present disclosure relates to compositions and compounded compositions including polyamide and a maleated polyolefin, articles formed from the same such as extruded or molded articles, and methods of making the compositions and articles. A composition includes a condensation polyamide that is at least 30 wt % of the composition and that is the predominant polyamide in the composition. The composition also includes from ≥10 wt % to ≤50 wt % of a maleic anhydride grafted polyolefin having a grafted maleic anhydride incorporation of ≥0.05 to ≤1.5 wt % based on total weight of the maleated polyolefin.
Claims20
A condensation polyamide composition, a reaction product thereof, or a compounded polyamide composition including one or both of the same, the condensation polyamide composition comprising:
- a condensation polyamide that is nylon 66 and that is at least 30 wt % of the condensation polyamide composition, wherein the condensation polyamide is the predominant polyamide in the condensation polyamide composition;
- and
- a maleated polyolefin that is from ≥10 wt % to ≤50 wt % of the condensation polyamide composition, wherein the maleated polyolefin comprises maleic anhydride grated onto a polyolefin backbone, the maleated polyolefin having a grafted maleic anhydride incorporation of ≥0.05 wt % to ≤1.5 wt % based on a total weight of the maleated polyolefin;
- wherein the reaction product of the condensation polyamide composition comprises polyamide-polyolefin copolymer formed from at least partial reaction of the condensation polyamide and the maleated polyolefin.
A condensation polyamide composition, a reaction product thereof, or a compounded polyamide composition including one or both of the same, the condensation polyamide composition comprising:
- a condensation polyamide that is nylon 66 having an AEG of ≥70 milliequivalents per kg (meq/kg) to ≤125 meq/kg, an RV of 40-80 as determined using formic acid via ASTM D789 and that is at least 30 wt % of the condensation polyamide composition, wherein the condensation polyamide is the predominant polyamide in the condensation polyamide composition;
- a polyamide copolymer chosen from nylon 66/6T, nylon 66/DI, nylon 66/D6, nylon 66/DT, nylon 66/610, nylon 66/612, or a combination thereof, wherein the polyamide copolymer is ≥15 wt % to ≤50 wt % of the condensation polyamide composition;
- and
- a maleated polyolefin that is from ≥20 wt % to ≤30 wt % of the condensation polyamide composition, wherein the maleated polyolefin comprises maleic anhydride grated onto a polyolefin backbone, the maleated polyolefin having a grafted maleic anhydride incorporation of ≥0.05 wt % to ≤1.5 wt % based on a total weight of the maleated polyolefin;
- wherein the condensation polyamide composition, reaction product thereof, or compounded polyamide composition is free of glass fibers;
- wherein the condensation polyamide composition, reaction product thereof, or compounded polyamide composition has
- a melting point of 262° C. as determined via ISO 11357,
- a tensile stress at break of 40 MPa to 60 MPa as determined from a dry-as-molded specimen using ISO 527,
- a Charpy notched impact strength at −30° C. of 80 KJ/m2 to 90 KJ/m2 as determined from a dry-as-molded specimen using ISO 179/1 eA, and
- a tensile modulus of 1552 MPa to 1903 MPa as determined from a dry-as-molded specimen using ISO 527;
- wherein the reaction product of the condensation polyamide composition comprises polyamide-polyolefin copolymer formed from at least partial reaction of the condensation polyamide and the maleated polyolefin;
- and
- wherein as compared to a control having an otherwise identical composition except containing less than 0.05 wt % of the maleated polyolefin, the condensation polyamide composition, reaction product thereof, or compounded polyamide composition is characterized by superior resistance to at least one selected from cold-temperature cracking, urea exposure, fuel exposure, oil exposure, high-temperature exposure, hydrolysis, glycolysis, and salt exposure.
