Abstract
Methods and systems for providing closed loop control of stimulation provided by an implantable stimulator device are disclosed herein. The disclosed methods and systems use a neural feature prediction model to predict a neural feature, which is used as a feedback control variable for adjusting stimulation. The predicted neural feature is determined based on one or more signals from an accelerometer configured in contact with the patient. The disclosed methods and systems can be used to provide closed loop feedback in situations, such as sub-perception therapy, when neural features cannot be readily directly measured.
Claims20
A method of treating pain in a patient using an implantable medical device (IMD) comprising an implantable pulse generator (IPG) configured for implantation in a patient and connectable to one or more electrode leads configured for implantation in the patient's spinal column, wherein each electrode lead comprises a plurality of electrodes, the method comprising:
- providing first stimulation to the patient's spinal cord using at least one of the plurality of electrodes;
- receiving one or more accelerometer signals from an accelerometer attached to the patient;
- correlating the one or more accelerometer signals with at least one feature of neural responses evoked in the patient's spinal cord by the first stimulation, wherein the at least one feature is indicative of pain treatment;
- providing second stimulation to the patient's spinal cord, wherein the second stimulation is configured to treat the patient's pain;
- and
- adjusting the second stimulation based on the correlation and the one or more accelerometer signals.
An implantable medical device (IMD) comprising:
- an implantable pulse generator (IPG) having a plurality of electrode nodes connectable to one or more electrode leads configured for implantation in the patient's spinal column, wherein each electrode lead comprises a plurality of electrodes, wherein the IPG is configured to:
- provide first stimulation to the patient's spinal cord using at least one of the plurality of electrodes;
- receive one or more accelerometer signals from an accelerometer attached to the patient;
- correlate the one or more accelerometer signals with at least one feature of neural responses evoked in the patient's spinal cord by the first stimulation, wherein the at least one feature is indicative of pain treatment;
- provide second stimulation to the patient's spinal cord, wherein the second stimulation is configured to treat the patient's pain;
- and
- adjust the second stimulation based on the correlation and the one or more accelerometer signals.
