Abstract
Systems and methods for increasing absorption of ingested substances into a subject's bloodstream are disclosed. The systems and methods involve application of an alternating field to the subject's abdomen, and may further include oral administration of at least one substance to the subject. Also disclosed are methods of treating or reducing the occurrence of a malabsorption condition in a subject via application of the alternating electric field to the subject's abdomen.
Claims20
A method of increasing absorption of at least one ingested substance into a bloodstream of a subject, the method comprising the steps of:
- (1) applying an alternating electric field to at least a portion of an abdomen of the subject for a period of time, wherein application of the alternating electric field increases permeability of at least a portion of an intestinal epithelia of the subject;
- and
- (2) orally administering the at least one substance to the subject after application of the alternating electric field has begun, wherein the increased permeability of the intestinal epithelia allows the at least one substance to cross an intestinal wall into the bloodstream.
A method of treating or reducing the occurrence of a malabsorption condition in a subject, the method comprising the steps of:
- applying an alternating electric field to at least a portion of an abdomen of the subject for a period of time, wherein application of the alternating electric field increases permeability of at least a portion of an intestinal epithelia of the subject.
