A method of forming a self-microemulsifying drug delivery system (SMEDDS), the method comprising constructing a pseudo-ternary phase diagram comprising at least one surfactant, at least one oil, and at least one cosolvent, wherein the weight ratio of the at least one surfactant, the at least one oil, and the at least one cosolvent is selected for forming the self-microemulsifying drug delivery system (SMEDDS) in water, and wherein a pharmaceutically active ingredient is dissolved at a concentration in the SMEDDS greater than the solubility of the pharmaceutically active ingredient alone in water.
